According to Henson, Alejandria Keigan as Shelby "comes from a different place than the Shelby in the movie. In this production, she brings a longing and a yearning for a child to her situation of being a pregnant diabetic. It's a hugely powerful scene."

Shelby, the young diabetic daughter of M'Lynn, becomes pregnant with her husband, despite doctors' cautions. The only genuinely optimistic woman in the play, she dies after delivering a healthy baby.

"The play uses the young Shelby to say things the other, jaded older women couldn't say convincingly," said Henson. "She becomes a powerful vehicle for telling the others not to dwell on the unimportant things, to live life fully, because you're only here for a short time."
